Week 3: still life. This week I focused on creating realistic materials by digitally painting objects from real life. The final task centred around a table which held different items of a different material. With this task, I was meant to simulate the actual material within my painting, however, I struggled with this greatly. I feel like brushes and more studies of different materials would be handy. I was so worried about correct shading and smooth blending with the painting I feel like I didn't capture the materials as well as I would have wanted. With the glass, I struggled to create something see-through while also clouding it to show the fact that it was an object there. When looking at reference most had a stripe of white to showcase the light source as well as add dimension to the shape. I feel my downfall with this piece was the brushes I decided to use. I feel like they didn't allow for as varied strokes as what is necessary for portraying a material and I think that this made the materials all look rather similar to one another. I think the only material I was able to capture was the cloth. I just didn't understand how certain materials would react with specific lighting and I feel this skill can be accomplished with increased studies into materials and how they interact with lighting and surfaces.
